Mustamakkara at the Tammela square
Mustamakkara, the black sausage, is a speciality of Tampere. The Tammela square has over the years become a very familiar place for many Finnish travellers. In Finland people travel from far to taste the sausage at the Tammela square.
Culture and sports
Tampere is called the mecha of Finnish ice hockey. The official ice hockey activity started at the outdoor ice of Tampere in the first half of the 20th century. Tampere also has the first Finnish ice hall called Hakametsän jäähalli. Also the oldest theatres of Finland are located in Tampere, e.g. Tampereen työväen teatteri from 1902 and Tampereen teatteri from 1904.
The most well known landmark in Tampere is Näsinneula, which is also the most famous viewing tower in Finland. Besides Näsinneula also the Pispala viewing tower is very popular and it has almost even better views far over the city of Tampere all the way to the lake Päijänne.
